It’s the eighteen hundreds in England and the story begins with Anemone Carstairs working undercover as Letty Thane a helper for the daughter of the mansion of Earl lord Edward Pelham, Cecelia Pelham(there’s also her pervert brother Anthony). She is there to confirm if the lord is trading secret information to France for money, as the lord has lost all his money gambling and is still maintaining the household which led them to this suspicion.
She is the daughter of Thomas Carstairs who is in the military, working as a spy who trainer his own daughter to be a spy. She reports right now to Oliver whom she visits at off hours hiding from the Pelham household. On one such occasion she bumps literally into a dashing gentleman Stephan Burke(doesn’t know his name by then), she somehow escapes from his grasp, its dark so she’s hoping he hasn’t noticed.But next day turns out Mr.Stephan visits lord Pelham’s house introducing himself as a far cousin of the lord from America, which seems fishy and so she spy’s them and overhears lord Pelham and Mr.Burkes conversation and turns out Lord Pelham is indeed a traitor.
Meanwhile she gets a letter from her dad a decoded piece of information, warning her that she is in danger, and that she has to immediately return to him to New Orleans. It happens so that the lord is murdered in front of her by some One Eye guy, and is left with a note about a ship’s location which she had overheard from conversation between the lord and Me.Burke. She is discovered with the dead body of the lord by Stephan with the note in hand.Being a spy her immediate reaction is to burn the note which she does. Stephan gets angry and takes anemone with him to his journey through a ship to America.
Eventually she reveals the location of the ship and finds out that Mr Stephan whom she suspected to be a American spy is just here to help his friend who has been captured as a slave in this particular ship whose information he was supposed to get from the lord. Their romance also blooms here, so they do manage to rescue his friend Jonny from the ship who has come to hate Brit’s now. So he creates misunderstandings between Burke and Anemone, Anemone leaves the ship without Stephan, heartbroken, and reaches her father who has a new mission here to catch the spider through De Vauban, who is a confidante of the French king Nepoleon bonaparte.He is scheming to kill lord Bramford not clear why (so there’s discussion about who this spider is between Anemone and Burke in Pelham house as well). So spider is a rogue spy who does not work for any country right now and has killed lord Pelham and many others and the reason for these killings in unclear as if not patriotism then why did he kill them?
Eventually Burke reaches Anemone and her dad and works with them to find spider and turns out Oliver is the spider and why did he become spider because he wasn’t given the honour he was suppose to get by his country. He is under the delusion that England has betrayed him.
Misunderstanding between Anemone and Burke is cleared and they move to America to Burkes family.
